Cielo's Commitment to Environmentally Responsible AI Usage
Cielo's Commitment to Sustainable AI Operations
At Cielo, we recognize the environmental impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. We are committed to ensuring our AI operations align with sustainable practices by partnering with industry leaders AWS and Azure, who maintain robust environmental commitments and cutting-edge sustainable infrastructure.
Our Sustainable Infrastructure Partners
We carefully selected AWS and Azure as our cloud partners due to their strong environmental commitments and proven track records in sustainable operations:
- Renewable Energy
- Our cloud operations benefit from AWS's achievement of 100% renewable energy matching for their global operations as of 2023.
- Microsoft Azure is committed to powering all data centers with 100% renewable energy by 2025, with over 34 gigawatts of renewable energy assets across 24 countries.
- Water Conservation
- AWS has achieved significant improvements in water efficiency, with a 40% improvement in Water Use Effectiveness since 2021.
- Azure's facilities in key markets are transitioning to zero water usage, with desert-region facilities reducing water consumption by up to 60%.
- Carbon Tracking and Reduction – We utilize advanced carbon tracking tools provided by our partners:
- AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT) for detailed emissions insights
- Azure's Emissions Impact Dashboard for comprehensive carbon tracking
- These tools show that cloud-based operations can be up to 98% more carbon efficient than on-premises alternatives
Sustainable AI Through Smarter Software
In addition to cloud infrastructure, we continually optimize the software powering our AI systems to reduce our environmental footprint. Our recent upgrade (from version 6.15 to 6.26) has introduced significant sustainability benefits:
- Resource Conservation – Smart memory usage means the system now reuses search queries instead of recreating them each time, reducing unnecessary processing power and energy consumption.
- Streamlined Communication – Information is now sent in batches, rather than one piece at a time, lowering the energy needed for processing and transfer.
- Lighter Software Package – The AI workspace now includes a “slim” version of OpenWebUI that is approximately 1GB smaller (around a 50% reduction), requiring less bandwidth, storage, and installation energy.
- Smarter Document Handling – Large document uploads now process in the background, preventing system timeouts and duplicated energy use.
- Optimized Document Exports – PDF exports are now smaller in size, reducing storage needs and energy for file transfers.
- Minimizing Digital Waste – By caching tool lists instead of repeatedly requesting them, the system cuts down on redundant data transfers and server strain. This not only streamlines performance but also reduces the energy footprint associated with unnecessary processing.
These improvements collectively reduce our:
- Energy consumption through more efficient processing
- Carbon footprint by minimizing unnecessary computational tasks
- Resource usage through smarter caching and storage optimization
Our Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
- Monitoring and Reporting
- We actively track our AI workload emissions using AWS and Azure's carbon tracking tools.
- Regular assessment of our environmental impact helps inform our operational decisions.
- Best Practices Implementation
- On our future roadmap where possible, we will consider strategic workload distribution across regions with the highest renewable energy usage.
- Optimization of AI processes to minimize computational requirements. Most of our AI usage sits within our delivery, where those teams use our productized AI tools, which are not free text prompts. In our production environment we limit the token usage to and therefore compute to some degree.
- Utilization of energy-efficient infrastructure and cooling systems in our office locations
- Future Goals we are committed to:
- Continuously monitoring and optimizing our AI operations for environmental efficiency
- Regular reporting on our environmental impact
- Supporting our cloud providers' sustainability initiatives
- Exploring new technologies and practices to reduce our environmental footprint
Partner Commitments
Our cloud partners have made significant environmental commitments:
AWS:
- Net-zero carbon emissions by 2040
- Water positive by 2030
- 100% renewable energy matching achieved in 2023
Azure:
- Carbon negative by 2030
- Water positive by 2030
- Zero waste commitment
- 100% renewable energy for data centers by 2025
Through these partnerships and our own initiatives, Cielo is actively working to ensure our AI operations contribute to a sustainable future while delivering exceptional service to our clients.
Monitoring and Verification
We regularly assess the environmental impact of our cloud infrastructure through:
- Cloud Carbon Footprint Tracking: We monitor the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our AWS usage on a monthly basis.
- Service-Level Emissions Analysis: We break down our carbon footprint by specific AWS services (e.g., compute, storage) and region to identify our most carbon-intensive operations and guide optimization efforts.
- Cloud Emissions Intensity Metrics: We correlate our carbon emissions with key business metrics to understand the environmental efficiency of our digital solutions.
This commitment to environmental responsibility is an integral part of our business strategy, ensuring that our AI-powered solutions not only deliver exceptional results but are also built and operated with a focus on digital sustainability.
